Can't wait to take a ride on the Brightline High Speed Rail soon!
In a recent announcement, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor shared exciting news about the expansion plans for the Brightline high-speed rail. Following a tour of Brightline facilities, she revealed that the rail, currently connecting Miami to Orlando, has set its sights on extending its reach to Tampa with a new station in Ybor City.
During the Brightline Tampa Delegation Tour, attended by local leaders including City Council member Gwendolyn Henderson and Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers, Castor outlined the proposed route. The extension, currently under review by the Florida Department of Transportation, follows the I-4 corridor from Orlando to Tampa, culminating in a station in the vibrant Ybor City area. The anticipated completion date for this project is 2028.
Brightline CEO Mike Reininger expressed enthusiasm for Tampa as the next major market, noting that connecting the city to the existing rail system would make 75 percent of the state easily accessible by Brightline. The extension, known as the Sunshine Corridor, would cover 85 miles and operate at speeds of 125 mph, significantly reducing travel time between Tampa and Orlando.
The rail project is being developed in phases, with the Tampa connection representing the third and final phase. Brightline has received a $15.9 million federal grant for preliminary designs and has applied for additional funding from the Federal Railroad Administration. The estimated cost of the Orlando to Tampa route, including a station in Lakeland, is $1 billion, and the construction is expected to take three years.
Castor highlighted the potential economic impact, drawing parallels to the development around the Brightline station in West Palm Beach. She envisions a similar transformation in Ybor City, citing the Gas Worx mixed-use development, currently underway, as a significant private investment in affordable housing—the largest in the city's history.
The Ybor City station, modeled after the successful West Palm Beach station, aims to expedite development plans for the area, bringing new housing units, malls, restaurants, and more. The high-speed rail's potential to reshape transportation and drive economic growth is eagerly anticipated by both local leaders and the community.
